Music Appreciation   

Discover the richness and diversity of music through an exploration of its history, styles, cultures, and lasting influence on society. This introductory course examines the fundamental elements of music while developing the skills to listen thoughtfully, recognize musical styles, and appreciate the works of influential composers and performers from around the world. 

Students will explore music from Western and non-Western traditions, gaining an understanding of how music reflects history, culture, and human expression. Through guided listening, discussion, and analysis, participants will develop a greater appreciation for the art of music and its role in everyday life. 

This course is for: 

  • Students interested in music, history, or the humanities  

  • Individuals fulfilling an arts or humanities general education requirement  

  • Music enthusiasts looking to deepen their listening and appreciation skills  

  • Community members interested in exploring a variety of musical traditions  

  • Anyone curious about the history, culture, and impact of music  

What You'll Learn: 

  • The fundamental elements of music, including melody, harmony, rhythm, form, and texture  

  • How to identify major families of musical instruments by sight and sound  

  • Characteristics of vocal, choral, instrumental, and chamber music  

  • Major musical genres, forms, and styles from Western and global traditions  

  • Historical periods in Western music and their defining characteristics  

  • The lives and works of influential composers and musicians  

  • How music reflects the cultures, values, and historical events of different societies  

  • Listening and critical analysis skills for understanding and evaluating musical works  

  • Concert etiquette and practices for engaging with live musical performances  

  • An appreciation for the diversity and evolution of music across cultures and time  

Note: Fridays will meet 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm, Saturdays are all day 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
